Le contre-ténor anglais Iestyn Davies est l'une des plus fulgurantes étoiles montantes du circuit musical actuel. Suivant son enregistrement fortement acclamé des cantates de Porpora, il nous revient avec un second album solo pour Hyperion, une sélection d'arias composées pour Gaetano Guadagni. Italien de naissance, Guadagni fut le premier castrato "moderne", célèbre dans toute l'Europe pour le lyrisme immaculé de sa voix et son jeu puissant et naturel. Il jouit non seulement d'une étroite relation artistique avec Haendel, qui veilla au développement de sa voix pour tenir les rôles d'altos dans ses oratorios anglais, mais il créa également le rôle d'Orphée dans Orfeo ed Euridice de Gluck, un opéra qu'il fît sien. Iestyn Davies est, encore une fois, accompagné par l'ensemble Arcangelo, dirigé par Jonathan Cohen.
